MetaCap

Methodology

How MetaCap calculates financial metrics, indices, and automated content.

Valuation Metrics

Price-to-Earnings (P/E) Ratio

Trailing P/E = Current Stock Price ÷ Trailing Twelve Month (TTM) Earnings Per Share

Forward P/E = Current Stock Price ÷ Next Twelve Month (estimated) Earnings Per Share

TTM earnings use the most recent 4 quarters of actual reported earnings. We use both GAAP and adjusted EPS where available.

Dividend Yield

Dividend Yield = Annualized Dividend Per Share ÷ Current Stock Price

We calculate forward yield based on the most recent quarterly dividend multiplied by 4 (for quarterly dividends).

Market Capitalization

Market Cap = Stock Price × Shares Outstanding

Shares outstanding are diluted and include all equity instruments (stock options, convertible securities). This represents fully diluted market cap.

Earnings Per Share (EPS)

GAAP EPS = Net Income (from 10-K or 10-Q) ÷ Diluted Shares Outstanding

Adjusted EPS = Net Income + Adjustments (stock-based comp, restructuring charges, one-time items) ÷ Diluted Shares

We display both where available. GAAP is the official figure; adjusted shows "normalized" earnings.

Automated Narratives

Stock overview pages include auto-generated summary paragraphs that combine:

  • Current price, change, and volume context
  • 52-week range and position
  • Valuation vs. sector median
  • Upcoming earnings or dividend dates

These are generated from data using conditional rules, not by language models. All numbers are verified against source data before display.
