Frequently asked questions

What is a stock market index?
A stock market index tracks the combined price performance of a defined group of stocks, such as the 500 large companies in the S&P 500. Indices are used as benchmarks for the market and as the basis for index funds and ETFs.
What is the difference between the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq?
The Dow holds 30 blue-chip stocks weighted by share price. The S&P 500 holds about 500 large companies weighted by market value. The Nasdaq Composite includes nearly all Nasdaq-listed stocks and is weighted toward technology.
Can you invest directly in an index?
No. An index is a calculation, not a security. Investors get index exposure through index mutual funds and ETFs, such as SPY for the S&P 500 or QQQ for the Nasdaq-100.
